Jake Hunter Detective Story: Ghost of the Dusk brings some interesting elements for fans of visual novels and murder mysteries thanks to its appealing art style and content to explore. It does not fully live up to the genre's reputation, though, as the challenge level falls short of expectations an the feeling of progression in the game's plot lacks consistency.

Ultimately, I found solving Ghost of the Dusk’s mysteries to be a tad rote by the end. Still, despite some slight repetition, the mechanics here are soundly implemented and I rather liked my time in Jake Hunter’s world. There are multiple extra cases (which were formerly mobile releases in Japan) available to play, including a hilarious bonus that depicts Jake in a chibi form, which should keep players busy for a good, long time. Don’t sleep on Ghost in the Dusk; it’s a pleasant addition to the 3DS library of games.

I think Jake Hunter Detective Story: Ghost of the Dusk accomplishes what it sets out to do. It’s more interactive visual novel than it is a typical vidoegame, but if you’re in the mood for a casual yet compelling experience that’s well written with a strong cast and solid presentation, you can’t go wrong here. The DS is the perfect platform for such an experience, and for those of us wanting to itch that Hotel Dusk/Last Window itch, Jake Hunter is a great option.
